MIAMI-BASED WATSCO, INC. EXPECTS SURGE IN SALES OF AIR CONDITIONERS
MIAMI, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Watsco, Inc. (AMEX: WSOA WSOB), the largest supplier of residential central air conditioners in Florida, said today that it expects a surge in sales of air conditioners following the damage inflicted last week by Hurricane Andrew.
Central air conditioning will play a major role in the rebuilding and repair of homes destroyed or damaged by Hurricane Andrew. The oppressive heat of the south Florida area most damaged by Hurricane Andrew makes air conditioning an environmental necessity, rather than a luxury. More than 95 percent of the homes in the damaged areas are equipped with central air conditioners.
It is estimated that more than 65,000 homes were destroyed, and new central air conditioners will be installed as part of the new homes that must be built. Additionally, because of the saltwater damage suffered by thousands of homes, a significant number of air conditioners will have to be replaced within a year. Gemaire Distributors, a Watsco subsidiary, is the largest central air conditioner distributor in the area with over 30 percent of the market in the damaged area. Gemaire expects to supply a major portion of these new air conditioners. Further, the company's manufacturing subsidiary, Watsco Components, manufactures replacement parts for air conditioning systems. Both subsidiaries expect to gain significant business by the replacement and repair of damaged central air conditioners.
Separately, the company said that all of its manufacturing and distribution facilities are fully operational following the hurricane.
Watsco, Inc., is a small-cap emerging growth company that manufactures products for climate control, environmental protection and energy conservation, and is the nation's largest independent distributor of residential central air conditioners. Revenues have grown from $15 million in 1987 to $170 million in 1991.
