MGM TELEVISION SETS MATT FREWER TO VOICE 'PINK PANTHER'
LOS ANGELES, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Television has announced that Matt Frewer, best known for his portrayal of the futuristic head-in-the-box Max Headroom, will appear as "the voice" of the Pink Panther when the new animated series debuts this fall. As the voice of the Pink Panther, Frewer will be making television history marking the first time in the 30-year history of the character that the Pink Panther will speak. The series also marks MGM's re-entry in the animation production business after a lapse of more than 30 years. Frewer, who catapulted from struggling stage actor in England to celebrity status in the United Kingdom and America for his portrayal of Max Headroom -- British television talk-show host, star of Coca- Cola commercials and eventually host of his own series on the ABC Network -- also appeared in "St. Elsewhere" and starred in the critically acclaimed "Doctor Doctor" series on the CBS Network. His exceptional talent for improvisational humor, evident in both the "Max Headroom" and "Doctor Doctor" series, led him to star in the recent Fox Television comedy series "Shaky Ground." Frewer's film credits include the blockbuster hit from Buena Vista "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids," the John Candy starrer "Speed Zone," "Far From Home" with Jennifer Tilly and Drew Barrymore and the Dabney Coleman/Teri Garr starrer "Short Time." Frewer also stars in Columbia Pictures' "20 Bucks" and stars with Holly Hunter in "Mother's Day" for HBO. "The Pink Panther" series is being produced in-house by MGM in association with Mirisch-Geoffrey-DePatie Freleng, the original production team of the Pink Panther cartoons. Forty half-hour episodes of "The Pink Panther" are being produced featuring the extraordinary escapades of the internationally famous feline augmented by the distinct vocalizations of Frewer. "We are tremendously excited about Matt Frewer providing the voice for the Pink Panther," remarked John Claster, president, Claster Television Inc., which is distributing the series domestically. "Based on the series' station clearance level, programmers are affirming television audiences' anticipation and excitement regarding a speaking Pink Panther." To date, the Pink Panther has amassed nearly 200 licensed merchandisers, including lines of clothing, toys, books and games in addition to his role as non-spokespanther for Owens-Corning Fiberglass insulation and building materials. -0- 3/1/93 /CONTACT: Jeff Pryor of Pryor & Associates, 818-972-4882, for Claster Television; or Craig Parsons of Pondel Parsons & Wilkinson, 310-207-9300, for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/
