MGM CREATES 'OFFICER OF THE MONTH' PROMOTION IN CONJUNCTION WITH
DAILY SYNDICATION LAUNCH OF 'IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT'
Award-winning Series to Air Five Times/Week
Starting Sept. 21 on 146 stations
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- MGM Television has created a unique promotion called "The Officer of the Month" in conjunction with September 1992 launch of the award-winning series "In the Heat of the Night," it was announced today by Steve Bradbury, vice president, advertising and promotion for MGM. The series, starring multi-Emmy award-winner Carroll O'Connor and Oscar nominee Howard Rollins, debuts as a daily series on Sept. 21 on 146 stations covering 86 percent of the United States.
"The Officer of the Month" promotion, created by Bradbury, is a monthly concept that provides stations the opportunity to work with local police departments to recognize officers that have "gone above and beyond the call of duty."
Stations are being provided with on-air promos featuring cast members that accommodate photos or video of the meriting officer. Additionally, special certificates have been created for presentation to the honorees. Stations have also been given a number of other suggestions on how to implement this promotion such as conducting a monthly write-in contest that ties into a local youth organization.
"This promotion offers stations the opportunity to work with local police departments to create a more positive image for police in their community," Bradbury said. "It's also a worthwhile way to honor those officers who risk their lives every day they are on the job."
"In the Heat of the Night" is the television adaptation of the 1967 Best Picture winner of the same name revolving around a white police chief (multi-Emmy award-winner O'Connor) and black detective (Rollins, an Oscar nominee for "Ragtime") at odds with each other in a small Mississippi town. Now considered by many to be one of television's finest, and perhaps last, quality police dramas, the show has proven a popular and critical success noted for its superb acting, timely stories and emotional impact.
During its run thus far, "In the Heat of the Night" has earned several distinguished honors, including a 1989 Emmy Award for O'Connor in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category (Rod Steiger won an Academy Award for the role in the original film version, which co-starred Sidney Poitier). In addition, both Rollins and the series itself have garnered NAACP Image Awards.
MGM Domestic Television Distribution is a division of Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer Inc.
