MGM'S 'SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION' COMPLETES ITS TRANSITION FROM THE STAGE TO THE SCREEN

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- MGM's much- anticipated screen version of John Guare's acclaimed, award-winning play "Six Degrees of Separation" wrapped principal photography today, Thursday, May 20, in New York City.
Directed by Fred Schepisi from Guare's own screenplay adaptation, "Six Degrees of Separation" stars Stockard Channing, reprising her original Broadway role, and Donald Sutherland as an upscale Fifth Avenue couple, Ouisa and Flan Kittredge. Will Smith ("Fresh Prince of Bel Air," "Made in America") also stars as Paul, a savvy young black man who infiltrates the home of the Kittredges. Pretending to be not only a college friend of their children's, but Sidney Poitier's son, he leads them on a mind-bending tour of every level of life in New York City, causing them to question their outlook and their values.
The impressive ensemble cast also includes acclaimed British actor Sir Ian McKellen, Academy Award-nominee Bruce Davison ("Longtime Companion"), Mary Beth Hurt, Anthony Michael Hall, Heather Graham, Eric Thal, Richard Masur, Jeffrey Abrams and Osgood Perkins.
Beginning principal photography on March 4, "Six Degrees of Separation" was filmed entirely on location in New York City, utilizing such distinctive Manhattan locales as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Rainbow Room, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Mortimer's.
A timely and evocative look at the vast differences -- and surprising similarities -- between society's "haves" and "have-nots," "Six Degrees of Separation" was produced by Schepisi and Arnon Milchan, with Ric Kidney executive producing. It is scheduled for release by MGM in late 1993.
