MFS NETWORK TECHNOLOGIES SUPPLIES NETWORK FOR TELE-MED APPLICATIONS

 OMAHA, Neb., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- MFS Network Technologies, Inc., systems integrator and builder of the Iowa Communications Network (ICN), is providing transmission facilities and terminal equipment for telemedicine applications to be demonstrated by Iowa Methodist Medical Center and other sites throughout the state on July 22.
 The Omaha-based telecommunications firm is acting as the systems integrator for the demonstration, which will link Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines; Greene County Medical Center, Jefferson; Camp Dodge, Des Moines; and Drake University, Des Moines. The demonstration will employ Iowa's ICN fiber optic network and specialized audio-visual equipment which will be employed to explore Iowa's ICN fiber optic network and specialized audio-visual equipment which will be employed to explore such clinical applications as teleradiology, telepathology, remote patient consultation, interactive healthcare education and continuing medical education.
 "This technology promises to revolutionize healthcare delivery and continuing education for Iowans in smaller to moderate-sized communities," said MFS Network Technologies President Kevin P. Moersch. "Among the many exciting applications for the Iowa Communications Network, telemedicine will be one of great significance," he concluded.
 ICN, scheduled for completion in 1994, will be the nation's largest state-owned telecommunications network. Designed to accommodate both analog and end-to-end switched digital transmission of voice, data and video, the network will employ 2,800 miles of fiber optic cable. Transmission speeds will range from 1200 Bits Per Second to 2.4 Gigabits
 With its hub at Camp Dodge, near Des Moines, ICN will link Iowa's Capitol Complex, three state universities, 15 community colleges, more than 25 private colleges and hundreds of libraries and state government offices.
 In addition to the telemedicine applications being demonstrated, the network will enable distance learning, video conferencing, bulk data transport, high-resolution graphics and computer-aided design. ICN also will provide access to INTERNET, a broad-based national networking system which links local area networks, wide area networks, value-added networks PCs, minicomputers and mainframes.
 Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad has termed ICN "our state's telecommunications highway of the future." The governor has stated that ICN will revitalize Iowa's educational system, promote high-quality, cost-effective healthcare delivery, reduce worker downtime, trim travel costs and enhance productivity.
