MFS COMMUNICATIONS LIMITED RECEIVES PUBLIC TELECOMMUNICATIONS OPERATOR LICENSE IN UNITED KINGDOM

OAKBROOK TERRACE, Ill., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- MFS Communications Limited (NASDAQ-NMS: MFST) announced today that it has been granted a national Public Telecommunication Operators (PTO) license by the United Kingdom's Department of Trade and Industry. MFS Communications Limited is a subsidiary of MFS Communications Company, Inc. (MFS).
Under this authority, MFS Communications Limited will offer business and government users a full range of switched and non-switched domestic services, as well as some international telecommunications services.
MFS Communications Limited is in a position to immediately begin construction of its initial 16 kilometer digital fiber optic network within the City of London. Service to business and government users, including both switched voice and private data/voice circuits, is planned to start in early 1994. The state-of-the-art, fiber optic network will employ advanced, fault-tolerant electronics and dual path architecture to ensure unparalleled reliability and security.
"London's business community will welcome increased competition from a telecommunications company that is responsive to customer's needs and provides superior service in a timely, cost effective manner," said Colin Williams, chief executive officer of MFS Communications Limited. "Those characteristics have contributed to MFS' success in the intensely competitive telecommunications marketplace in the United States. We expect these same characteristics will serve us well in the City of London."
MFS is the largest provider of competitive access and local private line telecommunications services for business and government users in the United States, and the first Competitive Access Provider to expand internationally.
With the creation of its network in London, MFS will be the first company to provide fiber optic links directly to its end users on both sides of the Atlantic. This capability provides businesses an unrivaled opportunity to take advantage of higher speed, end-to-end communications links now needed for the rapid and accurate transmission of information throughout the global financial community.
"Our targeted customers in the United Kingdom are leading global companies, which need high quality, innovative services," said Royce Holland, president of MFS. "We serve many of these companies today in New York, Chicago and other major U.S. markets. The London network is a key part of MFS' increasingly global strategy to serve business customers and we are delighted that our license application has been approved."
The planned MFS London network will be the company's 17th major metropolitan network and follows on the heels of MFS' recent announcements of new networks to be built serving the San Jose-Silicon Valley metropolitan area in California and the Tampa metropolitan area in Florida.
