MFA OFFICIALLY ADMITS 'MACEDONIAN' DENOTES ONLY CITIZENSHIP.

Speaking at the Greek Parliament shortly before the confidence vote Wednesday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras notified the MPs that the Greek authorities had received the verbal note from the Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs letting them know that Macedonia had fulfilled its Prespa agreement responsibilities.

Tsipras also addressed New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis saying that in the document they received from the Macedonian authorities the following explanation was given: "The Ministry further notes that in accordance with the letter and spirit of the Agreement it is understood that the term 'nationality' of the Second Party defined in Article 1 (3) (b) of the Agreement as 'Macedonian/citizen of the Republic of North Macedonia' refers exclusively to citizenship and does not define or predetermine ethnic affiliation/ethnicity, as provided in Article 2 (2) of the Constitutional Law for the implementation of the amendments XXXIII, XXXIV, XXXV and XXXVI of the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia. The Ministry also notes that as referred to in Article 1 (3) (c), Article 7 and in particular Article 7 (3) and (4), the 'Macedonian language' refers to the official language of the Second Party as recognized by the Third UN Conference on the Standardisation of Geographical Names, held in Athens in 1977, which is within the group of South-Slavic languages".

"What do our neighbors explain in this document that is legally binding and reiterates the responsibilities stemming from the agreement? Firstly, that the term nationality refers solely to the citizenship and doesn't define or predetermine the issue of the ethnic identity. And secondly, that the language of our neighbors, recognized at a UN conference in 1977, as defined in the agreement, belongs to the group of South Slavic languages," Tsipras said.

Tsipras also invited Mitsotakis to a TV debate.

"I am challenging you for the second time now and inviting you to tell us both here in the Parliament and in a TV debate what your arguments are concerning the Prespa agreement," Tsipras said.
