MEXICO REIGNS SUPREME AS MOST POPULAR WINTER VACATION, SAYS CARLSON TRAVEL NETWORK

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Mexico is the most popular destination for winter vacations, according to the Carlson Travel Network Agent Poll, a survey of more than 1,100 Carlson Travel Network travel agents who book leisure travel. Carlson Travel Network is one of North America's largest travel agencies. The nationwide survey is based on travel agency booking trends, setting it apart from other polls which monitor the traveling intentions of the public-at-large.
For the purposes of the Carlson Travel Network Agent Poll, a winter vacation was defined as a vacation that began, or will begin, between Dec. 1, 1993 and March 1, 1994.
Based on travel agent bookings, the ranking of popular winter vacation destinations is:
 1. Mexico
 2. Florida
 3. Colorado/Rockies
 4. Hawaii
 5. Other
 6. California
 7. Europe
 8. Australia
 9. Central America
(Popularity was determined by asking the travel agents to rank the destinations on a scale of 1 to 5, based on their client bookings.)
Additional breakouts can be found below.
"This survey reflects the preferences of travelers who use travel agents, a group who might be considered 'savvy travelers,'" said Kathryn Ramsted, director of Leisure Marketing for Carlson Travel Network. "This is a true snapshot of trends in winter vacations and what the 'hot spots' are among those always looking for a new experience."
 Other poll findings:
-- Fifty-five percent of travel agents polled said most of their clients are taking a vacation this winter.
-- Most people taking winter vacations, according to the poll, plan to spend between $500 and $1,000 (per person), on air, hotel and car expenses. A substantial number (20 percent) will spend even more -- between $1,000 and $3,000.
-- Most respondents said their clients have taken a winter vacation in the past. Just nine percent of the agents polled said 25-30 percent of vacationers are going for the first time.
-- The vast majority of agency clients taking a winter vacation are going someplace new.
-- Fifty-five percent of Carlson Travel Network agents say the average age of their winter vacationers is between 25 and 40 years of age. Forty-two percent of agents said the average age is 40-65.
Travel agents from 29 states took the poll over a five-day period in December.
Carlson Travel Network developed the Carlson Travel Agent Poll to gain insight on trends in the travel industry, from one of the largest travel agent networks in the world. In 1994, Carlson Travel Network will release additional Carlson Travel Agent Poll results.
