METRICOM LAUNCHES RICOCHET MOBILE ACCESS TO CORPORATE LANS.

Metricom, Inc. (Nasdaq:MCOM), a provider of mobile data networking and technology, has launched Ricochet Private Network service including its new Wireless Access Server System.

RPN lets businesses provide workers secure, mobile access to corporate LANs as well as the public Internet. The WASS gateway extends a company's LAN into the Ricochet wide area mobile digital network so that employees can use Ricochet wireless modems to dial into their corporate LAN, accessing resources including email, databases, file and fax servers, applications, and Intranet Web sites, thereby mirroring their in-office experience remotely.

"Launch of our RPN service falls in line with Metricom's goal to extend resources of corporate LANs to users requiring remote access to critical data and business applications while in the field, telecommuting, or working at client sites, without the dependency of a phone line," said George Wren, vice president of strategic marketing for Metricom. "By providing this `out of LAN' experience, we can offer companies an affordable, scalable Virtual Private Network solution while increasing productivity for their users by basically giving employees their desktop anywhere."

Integral to RPN, Ricochet WASS functions as a gateway between a corporate LAN/Intranet and the Ricochet Mobile Digital Network, which operates within the license-free (902-928 MHz) portion of the Radio Frequency spectrum and incorporates Metricom's patented frequency-hopping mesh architecture.

Providing a high level of security, Ricochet WASS employs standard tunneling protocols for authenticated connections from Metricom's Wireless Network Access Server to the customer-site gateway router. In addition, Ricochet security includes RSA RC4 data stream encryption and the inherent security of its mobile digital network architecture.

User-level security adds another layer of protection and can include both Metricom device-level authentication/authorization and customer-configured user authentication via most industry standards. In this way, users gain access to both the public Internet and a company's private network without jeopardizing the security of the LAN.

Deloitte & Touche, a professional services firms in the United States, has participated in Metricom's beta test program. Deloitte & Touche is using Ricochet to connect auditors and consultants in the San Francisco Bay Area to its office system so they can securely access email, daily reports, the company's Intranet and Lotus Notes databases from client locations throughout the area.

"We were looking to reduce unpredictable dial-up costs while increasing productivity for our people in the field who often times find themselves temporarily located at a client site for a week or month or more," said Rami Mazid, director of information systems for Deloitte & Touche. "Now, instead of inconveniencing a client with setting up temporary outside modem lines, our people can simply walk into client sites equipped with Ricochet access to Deloitte & Touche resources and be productive immediately."

Part of Deloitte & Touche's criteria for selecting Ricochet included secure mobile access to their corporate LAN and predictable, budgetable costs. Benefits of Ricochet include fixed monthly pricing, high-speed Internet access, "always on" connections, no roaming fees, and the ability to access corporate LANs through secure tunneling architectures. "Our workforce is very happy with the service level we've seen," concluded Mazid.

Metricom's Ricochet Private Network will be available in the second quarter of 1999. RPN is comprised of WASS gateway, leased circuit connecting WASS to the corporate LAN, and wireless modems with Ricochet mobile data service. RPN is fully scalable as customers can add WASS ports as needed and control performance of the circuits between their site and the Ricochet network. Ricochet WASS can be purchased as a one-year site license and is scalable in block increments from 50 to 500 ports.
