METLIFE PUBLISHES A FITNESS WALKING GUIDE IN COOPERATION WITH THE ROCKPORT INSTITUTE

NEW YORK, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Exercise doesn't have to hurt -- it can be as basic as walking. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, in cooperation with the Rockport Institute, has published a guide to fitness walking for members of its affiliated MetLife HMOs across the country.
The Rockport Fitness Walking Guide features an introductory section which includes: how to find your fitness level, pre-test warm-ups, taking your pulse, and target heart rates. Featured are separate walking test charts for men and women, color-keyed by age range. The ten-page guide offers a step-by-step program for all levels, and depicts suggested stretching exercises for before and after walking. The last two pages are full-size "Daily Walking Logs" with room for 20 weeks of walking progress. The walking logs have slots for distance, time, and heart rate for each walk.
The booklet for this popular walking program is provided to MetLife HMO members to encourage them to consider this effective and low-risk form of exercise. "According to the American Heart Association, regular aerobic physical activity plays a significant role in preventing heart and blood vessel disease," said Dr. Paul Bluestein, national medical director Managed Care Services Group, and vice president, MetLife. "In addition, there is growing recognition that exercise is an important factor in long-term weight management."
Readers nationwide can obtain a copy of the Rockport Fitness Walking Guide by writing to Ms. Stella Croker, MetLife Managed Care Services Group, 57 Greens Farms Road, Westport, Conn., 06880.
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and its affiliates insure or administer individual and group life, health, pension and property and casualty coverage fore more than 45 million people around the world.
