METLIFE HMO INTRODUCES NEW WOMEN'S HEALTH INITIATIVE(SM) PROGRAM; WOMEN'S PROGRAM FOLLOWS OTHER METLIFE INITIATIVES WITH FOCUS ON WELLNESS
NEW YORK, Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Metropolitan Life Insurance Company today announced the introduction of its Women's Health Initiative(SM) Program, designed for women who are members of MetLife's affiliated HMOs. These HMOs are known as MetLife Health Care Networks in the states that they serve. A unique component of the program provides women with reminders to seek medical advice at appropriate times in their lives and to follow recommendations for screenings and checkups such as Pap tests, mammograms, and colon cancer screenings.
Other educational materials include an illustrated 38-page book made available as a standard benefit to women in MetLife HMOs. The book will be of interest to women of all ages, with up to date information on contraception, pregnancy, and menopause; as well as diet, exercise, and self-image. In addition, the book contains guidelines about prevention and detection of cancer, including a breast self-examination chart. The book emphasizes that women should seek advice from their doctors on important health issues.
"Implementation of the Women's Health Initiative Program represents a continuation of MetLife's managed care philosophy that the health care industry must change its focus from the treatment of illness to the promotion of wellness and the prevention of sickness," said Robert A. Chernow, senior vice president in charge of the company's managed care services. "Our renewed commitment to wellness was marked earlier this year with the introduction of the MetLife Child Health Initiative(SM) Program, which provides educational materials to parents of children up to six years of age and tracks pre-school immunization for the children of all MetLife HMO members. More recently, the newly enhanced MetLife Healthy Pregnancy(SM) Program was introduced, complete with a comprehensive 64-page book," he continued. "The Women's Health Initiative Program is yet another step forward in our health care partnership with MetLife HMO members, as we assist them in their efforts toward improved health and quality of life by providing educational materials and reminders of recommended checkups." Within the next month or so, we will announce a similar program for men enrolled in MetLife affiliated HMOs," added Chernow.
Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and its affiliates insure or administer individual and group life, health, pension, and property and casualty coverage for more than 45 million people around the world.
