MESABA REPORTS JULY TRAFFIC

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesaba Aviation, Inc., today said that it flew 28 million revenue passenger miles during the month of July, a 4.1 percent decrease when compared with 29.2 million revenue passenger miles flown during the same month last year (a revenue passenger mile equals one passenger flown one mile). The airline said it carried 135,948 passengers during the month, a decrease of 3.3 percent from 140,550 passengers carried last July. Mesaba's load factor in July was 47.4 percent compared with 64.6 percent during the same month one year ago.
The company said July's traffic results reflected the economy and ongoing media coverage of Northwest's financial condition. However, fleet capacity continued to increase due to further scheduled deliveries of new 37-seat de Havilland Dash 8 turboprops. As a result, the company said traffic growth and capacity moved out of alignment in July, resulting in the lower passenger load factor. The company said these factors will continue to affect passenger traffic and load factors throughout the second quarter.
The company added that the unusually high passenger load factor in July 1992 resulted primarily from the half-price ticket sale promotions offered by the airline industry last summer.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. The regional carrier provides connecting service to Northwest at Minneapolis/St. Paul International and Detroit Metropolitan airports. The airline currently serves 48 cities in 15 states and one Canadian province.
Mesaba Aviation, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Minnesota- based AirTran Corporation. AirTran's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol ATCC.
