MESABA REPORTS AUGUST TRAFFIC

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesaba Aviation, Inc., today said that it flew 28.9 million revenue passenger miles during the month of August, a 4 percent decrease when compared with 30.1 million revenue passenger miles flown during the same month last year (a revenue passenger mile equals one passenger flown one mile). The airline said it carried 141,135 passengers during the month, level with the 141,472 passengers carried last August. Mesaba's load factor in August was 47.7 percent compared with 63.2 percent during the same month one year ago.
The company said August's traffic results reflected the sluggish economy, the impact upon August bookings from the recent media coverage of Northwest's financial condition, and comparisons to the half-price ticket sale offered by the airline industry last summer. However, fleet capacity continued to increase due to the final two deliveries of new 37-seat de Havilland Dash 8 turboprops. As a result, the company said traffic growth and capacity moved out of alignment in August, resulting in the lower passenger load factor. The company said these factors will continue to affect passenger traffic and load factors throughout the second and third quarter.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. The regional carrier provides connecting service to Northwest at Minneapolis/St. Paul International and Detroit Metropolitan airports. The airline currently serves 48 cities in 15 states and one Canadian province.
Mesaba Aviation, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Minnesota- based AirTran Corporation. AirTran's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol ATCC.
