MESABA FILES FOR ROUTE AUTHORITY TO SERVE DETROIT-OTTAWA

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesaba Aviation, Inc., which operates as Northwest Airlink, said that it has filed an application with the U.S. Government for route authority to provide scheduled airline service from Detroit to Ottawa, Ontario. If endorsed by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Mesaba's application will be forwarded to the Canadian Government.
Mesaba currently operates scheduled service between Detroit and London, Ontario and between Detroit and Hamilton, Ontario. In addition, Mesaba recently received final approval to serve Thunder Bay, Ontario, from Minneapolis/St. Paul and expects to begin service in March, 1993.
In its application the regional carrier filed for approval to provide daily nonstop service. Officials from Mesaba said that they hoped that route approval could be obtained early in the spring, at which time the airline would release additional details of its planned service. Mesaba hopes to begin the service this summer.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. Under the agreement, Mesaba and Northwest coordinate schedules, fares and marketing programs between the two route systems. Mesaba currently provides scheduled airline service to 45 cities in 15 states, plus the Province of Ontario.
