 MESABA DEDICATES DETROIT HANGAR
DETROIT, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesaba Aviation today hosted an

open house to dedicate its new maintenance hangar and training facility located at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Officials from Mesaba, Wayne County, Metropolitan Airport and the State of Michigan joined other invited guests in the dedication ceremony for the 45,000 square foot building.
Robert D. Swenson, president and chairman of Mesaba, said the facility reflects the airline's commitment to provide premier service to the region. "Our decision to invest in a major facility at Detroit Metro reflects our long-term commitment to growth at this airport, to the state of Michigan and to the surrounding states served by Mesaba."
Construction on the facility began in November 1990 and the airline began occupancy in May of 1991. The building is designed for maintenance of Mesaba's aircraft and houses training areas for mechanics, customer service employees and flight crews as well. The hangar also contains space for a commissary and storage.
The Detroit hangar is Mesaba's fourth aircraft maintenance facility. The company operates others at its headquarters, Minneapolis/St. Paul, at Central Wisconsin Airport in Mosinee, Wis., and at Gordy Newstrom Field in Grand Rapids, Minn. The Detroit facility is second in size only to the company's 86,000 square foot Twin Cities hangar which also houses the company's corporate offices.
The hangar is designed to allow at least four Mesaba aircraft to be worked on simultaneously and is large enough to accommodate aircraft the size of Boeing 727s. The airline currently schedules mechanics on a 24- hour, three-shift basis at the new facility.
Mesaba Aviation operates as Northwest Airlink under a marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines. The regional carrier provides connecting service to Northwest at their Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul hubs.
Mesaba began Detroit service in December of 1988 and has grown to become Detroit Metropolitan Airport's second largest airline in terms of daily scheduled flight departures. The airline provides service from Detroit to destinations in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Ontario.
