MESABA AVIATION PILOTS ENTER MEDIATION ON LABOR AGREEMENT
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The pilots of Mesaba Aviation are scheduled Aug. 31 to continue meeting with a federal mediator in an attempt to resolve differences over wage and work rule issues in their ongoing labor contract talks.
Contract talks began last November, but stalled to the point where a federal mediator was called into the negotiations last month. The Mesaba contract became amendable April 1, 1992. Under the Railway Labor Act, which governs airline labor relations, an amendable contract still continues in effect until it is replaced or the National Mediation Board declares an impasse and both sides wait out a 30-day cooling off period.
About 400 Mesaba pilots are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), which represents 42,000 airline pilots at 44 U.S. air carriers. The Minneapolis-based airline operates as a Northwest Airlink carrier, has hubs in Minneapolis and Detroit, and serves cities in the eastern and Midwest states as well as Canada.
