MESABA ANNOUNCES PROMOTION OF FREDERICKSEN

    MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesaba Aviation, Inc. (a subsidiary of AirTran Corporation) (NASDAQ-NMS: ATCC) today announced the promotion of John S. Fredericksen to the position of senior vice president--operations.  Fredericksen will oversee the areas of flight, maintenance, customer and inflight service in his new capacity with the company.  Prior to joining the company in July of 1992 as vice president, general counsel, Fredericksen was employed by the Regional Airline Association as president, and from 1980 to 1987 was an attorney with the Federal Aviation Administration.  He also served six years as a naval aviator.
    "We look forward to the experiences and skills that John will bring to this position and welcome him in his new capacity," said Robert D. Swenson, chairman, president and CEO of AirTran and Mesaba.
    Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under an airline marketing agreement with Northwest Airlines.  The regional carrier provides connecting service to Northwest at Minneapolis/St. Paul International and Detroit Metropolitan airports.  The airline currently serves 48 cities in fifteen states and one Canadian province.
    AirTran's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol ATCC.
