MESABA AND NORTHWEST EXTEND AIRLINK MARKETING AGREEMENT

MESABA AND NORTHWEST EXTEND AIRLINK MARKETING AGREEMENT
 MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- AirTran Corporation

(NASDAQ-NMS: ATCC), parent of Mesaba Aviation, Inc., announced today that Northwest Airlines and Mesaba Aviation, Inc., have amended their Airlink contract.
Robert D. Swanson, president and chairman, said, "We have extended the terms of our current Airlink route system for five years and modified portions of our agreement with Northwest that will allow Mesaba to profitably expand into new markets with new aircraft types."
"To continue their very successful operations, our hubs at Minneapolis/St. Paul and Detroit need to be strong both as national hubs and as regional hubs," said Geoffrey T. Crowley, Northwest vice president for Affiliate Airline Operations. "Mesaba's Airlink operations, which are going to continue to grow in the years ahead, are the key to assuring both strong regional passenger feed into our hubs and good passenger service for communities throughout the Great Plains and Upper Midwest," Crowley said.
In addition, AirTran increased the original exercise prices and extended the expiration dates of certain warrants held by Northwest Aircraft, Inc. to Dec. 31, 1996. These warrants entitle Northwest to purchase a total of 749,539 shares of AirTran's common stock at various exercise prices increasing during the term of the warrants and ranging from $5.00 per share to $6.75.
Mesaba operates as Northwest Airlink under the marketing agreement with Northwest. The regional carrier provides connecting service to Northwest at Minneapolis/St. Paul International and Detroit International Airports. The airline currently serves 39 cities in 13 states and one Canadian province.
Mesaba Aviation, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Minnesota- based AirTran Corporation. AirTran's common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol ATCC.
