MESA PROFITS SOAR IN FIRST QUARTER

FARMINGTON, N.M., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ --- Mesa Airlines, Inc. (NASDAQ: MESA) reported its earnings today for the first quarter of its 1993 fiscal year. The company had operating income of $9,648,000 on $85,022,000 of operating revenue, with a net income of $5,390,000, as compared to a loss of 539,000 in the same period last year. With average shares outstanding of 16,320,000, the company had earnings per share of $0.33.
Total passengers increased to 1,065,061 compared to 862,822. Yield per revenue passenger mile dropped to 37.2 from 39.2 and the operating cost per available seat mile dropped to 17.6 from 18.6 in the first quarter one year ago.
Mesa President Larry Risley stated, "We are beginning to see some improvements in our WestAir subsidiary through controllable cost reductions. Also we are identifying other possible significant cost reductions, primarily in the area of equipment selection. In addition, we are now focusing on determining the future of markets which do not contribute to WestAir profitability."
The loss in the Dec. 31, 1991, quarter is a result of the pooling of interests which caused WestAir to be included in that quarter's figures.
Mesa Airlines Inc. is the largest independently owned regional carrier in the country, operating seven different airline systems in 144 cities with a fleet of 130 aircraft.
