MESA AIRLINES REACHES CODE-SHARE AGREEMENT WITH AMERICA WEST AIRLINES
FARMINGTON, N.M., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesa Airlines Inc. (NASDAQ: MESA) and America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) jointly announced today that they will implement a new code-sharing agreement beginning Oct. 1, 1992. The two carriers will integrate their existing Phoenix operations resulting in a significant increase in available connections for passengers of both airlines. Under the code-sharing agreement, Mesa Airlines' Phoenix-based service will operate as America West Express.
"This agreement will be a great benefit to Mesa's passengers, providing all of the advantages of a major airline. America West Express passengers will receive frequent flyer miles and through fares with America West," said Larry Risley, chief executive officer for Mesa Airlines. "We look forward to a successful venture with America West."
On Oct. 1, America West Express will offer convenient connections at Phoenix to Durango and Grand Junction, Colo.; Gallup, N.M. and Farmington; and Yuma, Ariz.
America West Express will expand its service to Arizona cities Kingman, Prescott, Flagstaff, Fort Huachuca, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu, as well as to Palm Springs, Calif. and Telluride, Colo., beginning Oct. 15, and will be fully integrated into the America West Express system by mid-December. All America West Express flights will be operated with Mesa's flagship aircraft, the 19-passenger Beechcraft 1900 turboprop.
Michael J. Conway, chief executive officer of America West Airlines, said, "This is an important step forward in our efforts to reorganize this company. Mesa Airlines runs a superb operation and its route structure complements the America West route system."
He added, "We anticipate that this code-sharing agreement will result in a definite financial benefit for America West. The Mesa Airlines markets will expand our passenger base, thus enhancing the opportunity for increased revenues. At the same time, America West's operating costs will decrease with the elimination of the Dash 8 aircraft from our fleet." Conway noted that America West currently utilizes the Dash 8 turboprop to serve smaller communities in Arizona, California and Colorado. "Ultimately, this agreement will expand the scope of America West's service, provide uninterrupted service to communities we currently serve with the Dash 8 and offer increased opportunities for convenient travel to passengers of both America West and Mesa Airlines," the America West chief executive officer stated.
America West Express will operate from Gate B1 at Sky Harbor International Airport's Terminal 4. America West Express will handle all Mesa Airlines' Phoenix-based flights until they are fully integrated into America West Express. America West Express' schedule and fares will be available in computer reservations systems beginning Sept. 14, 1992. Until Mesa's flights are transitioned over in the America West Express system, they should be booked as a Mesa flight through Mesa's reservations office at 800-MESA-AIR or through a local travel agent.
Conway stated, "We are very pleased to reach this agreement with such an outstanding carrier. Mesa Airlines has an excellent safety record and a reputation for impeccable service."
