MESA, ARIZ., POLICE RECEIVE TWO MD 500E HELICOPTERS

MESA, Ariz., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mesa (Arizona) Police Department has taken delivery of two turbine-powered McDonnell Douglas MD 500E helicopters for law enforcement work in Arizona's third largest city.
The department will use the helicopters for routine patrol, search and rescue and other law enforcement duties in the 122-square-mile city located east of Phoenix. The aircraft are equipped with state of the art law accessories, including Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) systems.
Following an initial training period, the department expects the helicopters to be operational in January 1994.
The helicopters were offered to the city under a unique 18-month lease/purchase agreement that allows the department to explore the benefits of aerial patrols at lower financial risk.
"This creative approach provides the department with needed equipment at minimum cost," said Dale Christman, manager of commercial sales for the company.
McDonnell Douglas will train the pilots and mechanics and perform maintenance on the aircraft during the period of the lease. The department has the option to purchase the helicopters at the end of the 18-month lease.
