MERYL STREEP, DAVID STRATHAIRN, KEVIN BACON AND JOSEPH MAZZELLO SET TO STAR IN 'THE RIVER WILD' FOR UNIVERSAL

 UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Academy Award- winning actress Meryl Streep stars with David Strathairn, Kevin Bacon and Joseph Mazzello in Universal Pictures' suspense adventure "The River Wild," it was announced today by Tom Pollock, chairman of the MCA Motion Picture Group, and Casey Silver, president of production for Universal Pictures.
 Scheduled to start production in July, the Turman-Foster Production will be directed by Curtis Hanson ("The Hand That Rocks The Cradle") from a screenplay by Denis O'Neill, Raynold Gideon and Bruce Evans. The film will be produced by David Foster and Lawrence Turman, who are currently producing Largo Entertainment's "The Getaway," starring Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.
 In "The River Wild," Streep and Strathairn star as a couple who take their son Roarke, played be Mazzello, on a river rafting vacation with the hope that it will strengthen their faltering marriage. The trip takes a perilous turn when they meet up with two mysterious strangers and circumstances careen out of control, testing them to their limits as the river carries them toward their final destination.
 Streep is a two-time Oscar-winner, for Best Actress in "Sophie's Choice" and Best Supporting Actress in "Kramer vs. Kramer." Other work she has been nominated for includes "A Cry in the Dark," "Postcards From the Edge," "The Deer Hunter," "The French Lieutenant's Woman," "Silkwood," "Out of Africa" and "Ironweed." She was most recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in Universal's "Death Becomes Her." She will next be seen in "The House of the Spirits."
 Strathairn is quickly becoming one of the busiest actors in Hollywood, having starred in "Passion Fish" opposite Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard, "Sneakers," "A League of Their Own" and "City of Hope." He recently appeared in Neil Simon's "Lost in Yonkers" and can currently be seen co-starring opposite Tom Cruise in "The Firm."
 Bacon stars as Wade, one of the mysterious strangers. Bacon's extensive career has included such films as "A Few Good Men," "JFK," "Flatliners," "Tremors," "The Big Picture," "She's Having a Baby," "Footloose" and "Diner." He will next be seen in the comedy "The Air Up There."
 Mazzello can presently be seen as Tim, a dinosaur lover who is thrilled to be visiting his grandfather in "Jurassic Park." He co-starred in "Radio Flyer" and has had key roles in "Presumed Innocent," "Jersey Girls," and is currently filming "Shadowlands" for director Richard Attenborough.
 Hanson most recently directed the hit thriller "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle." He previously directed "Bad Influence" and "The Bedroom Window."
 Together, Foster and his partner Turman have produced a total of 16 films including "The Drowning Pool," "Heroes," "The Thing," "Tribute," "Mass Appeal," "The Mean Season," "Running Scared" and "Short Circuit."
