MERVYN'S, TARGET, DAYTON HUDSON AMONG NATION'S BEST PLACES TO WORK

HAYWARD, Calif., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Dayton Hudson Corp. (NYSE: DH), whose divisions include Mervyn's and Target stores, has been named one of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For in America."
The listing is contained in Doubleday Publisher's revised copy of "The 100 Best Companies to Work For in America," by San Francisco Bay Area business journalists Robert Levering and Milton Moskowitz.
The companies listed " ... are magnets for people looking for meaningful work. They are models for companies trying to get it right," the authors declare.
After interviewing thousands of employees nationwide, the authors rated companies on six criteria: Pay/Benefits, Job Security, Pride in Work/Company, Openness/Fairness and Camaraderie/Friendship.
Although the companies selected are diverse, ranging from employers of 390,000 to only 367, "the common ground of all the companies in the list is a deep-seated respect for the people they employ," Doubleday said.
"They listen to what we say," reports a Target employee.
Dayton Hudson is California's largest general merchandise retailer.
"Most big companies in America contribute about 1 percent of pretax profits to philanthropic purposes. Following a policy adopted by the Dayton family after World War II, Dayton Hudson allocates 5 percent every year," the authors observe.
Mervyn's operates 265 stores in 15 states, including 118 stores in California.
Target operates 113 stores in California and 508 stores overall in 32 states.
Mervyn's specializes in national brand and top-quality private label clothing and home fashions at great prices. Sales in 1991 (latest figure available) totaled $4.1 billion.
