NEW YORK, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. (NYSE: MER), today announced that Peter Tufo, a respected investment banker, lawyer and public official, has joined the firm as a managing director in the investment banking group.
Mr. Tufo, 54, will "bring his extensive experience in the private and public sectors to assist Merrill Lynch in strengthening its investment banking franchise in transportation and other industrial sectors in the U.S. and abroad," said Barry S. Friedberg, executive vice president, investment banking, in announcing the appointment.
Mr. Tufo, who most recently served as senior advisor to Lazard Freres & Co., began his career with the New York-based law firm of Davis, Polk & Wardwell in 1965 where he practiced corporate law until 1968.

In 1986, Mr. Tufo and Mr. Zuccotti merged their firm into the firm of Brown & Wood, where Mr. Tufo was a senior partner until 1990 when he joined Lazard Freres & Co. as senior advisor to the firm.
Mr. Tufo currently serves as unpaid chairman and chief executive officer of both the New York State Thruway Authority and the New York State Canal Corporation. He was appointed to these positions in 1989.
Mr. Tufo has been active in many other public service activities including: chairman of the New York City Board of Correction for ten years, public member of the Administrative Conference of the U.S. and appointment to the New York City Commission on Education. He also served as on-camera host and commentator for several award-winning television documentary series on crime and education.
Mr. Tufo is a former director of Storer Broadcasting, Inc. and New York Magazine Corp. and has held numerous volunteer board and trustee positions with civic and educational organizations. He is past president of the Yale Law School Association.
Mr. Tufo, who resides in Manhattan, is a graduate of Beloit College and Yale Law School. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate of law degree by the Graduate School of the City University in recognition of his public service. From 1962 until 1965, Mr. Tufo also served in the United States Marine Corps.
