MERIDIAN SHAREHOLDERS ELECT CARPENTER TECHNOLOGY HEAD AND MERIDIAN CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER AS NEW DIRECTORS

 READING, Pa., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Shareholders of Meridian Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ: MRDN) today elected two new members to three-year terms on the bank holding company's Board of Directors during the annual shareholders meeting.
 Robert W. Cardy, 56, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Reading-based Carpenter Technology Corp., has been elected to succeed Harold F. Still, Jr. Still retired from the Meridian Board, where he had been a director since the formation of Meridian in 1983. Still's retirement from the Board caps a 47-year banking career, including 45 years with Meridian and the former Central Penn National Bank.
 David E. Sparks, 48, Meridian's Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer, succeeds Charles H. Norris, an attorney in Wayne, Pa., who did not stand for re-election. Norris had been a Meridian director since 1988.
 Cardy joined Carpenter, a Fortune 500 specialty steel and alloys manufacturer, in 1962. He was elected to his present position there in July of 1992.
 Sparks joined Meridian in his current capacity in 1990. At Meridian he is responsible for the Finance and Administration Group, with the functions of human resources, the chief financial officers of the corporation's non-banking subsidiaries, finance and control, funds management, internal audit, corporate development and investor relations.
 Re-elected to three-year terms on Meridian's Board today were: Sidney D. Kline, Jr., a partner with the law firm of Stevens & Lee; Joseph F. Paquette, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Philadelphia Electric Company; Paul R. Roedel, retired Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carpenter Technology Corp.; and Judith M. Von Seldeneck, Chief Executive Officer of The Diversified Search Companies.
