MERIDIAN BANK INTRODUCES AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE CHECK SERIES

READING Pa., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- In conjunction with the celebration of Black History Month, Meridian Bank will begin offering a series of checks bearing portraits of famous African-Americans on Feb. 1, 1993.
Each check in the series features one of five early African-American leaders who made significant contributions to America's history: Abolitionist Frederick Douglass; Madame C.J. Walker, a pioneer in the hair care industry; Booker T. Washington, educator and founder of Tuskegee University; George Washington Carver, agricultural chemist; and pan Africanist Marcus Garvey.
The checks, available to all Meridian Bank checking account customers, can be ordered through any Meridian Bank branch. The check series was designed and marketed by The Marshall Johnson Agency, Memphis, Tenn. Meridian Bank will reimburse Marshall Johnson $4 for each set of the checks sold. Marshall Johnson will in turn distribute a portion of the proceeds to the United Negro College Fund and as royalties to descendants of the individuals portrayed on the checks.
Nora Brownell, director of Meridian Bancorp's Corporate Affairs department, said, "We're pleased to offer the African-American check series, which is one of a significant number of initiatives sponsored by Meridian to celebrate cultural diversity. Other initiatives include a Black History Month reception in Philadelphia, a 'Managing Diversity' development program for employees, a Minority Support Group for Meridian's minority employees, sponsorship of the Philadelphia Orchestra's Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert, and advertising initiatives and special events that celebrate ethnic and cultural diversity throughout Meridian's market area."
Meridian Bank, a subsidiary of Reading-based Meridian Bancorp, Inc., (NASDAQ: MRDN) maintains 192 branch offices throughout 15 Pennsylvania counties.
