MERGER OF RITTER FOOD CORPORATION WITH SYSCO COMPLETED; SYSCO GAINS STRATEGIC FOOTHOLD IN POPULOUS NORTHEAST

 HOUSTON, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- SYSCO Corporation (NYSE: SYY) announced today that the merger of Ritter Food Corporation of Elizabeth, N.J. has been completed. Ritter is the largest independent foodservice distributor in the Northeast and will reinforce SYSCO's presence in that densely-populated area. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
 The new Ritter Sysco Food Services, Inc. has an annual sales volume of about $160 million and markets and distributes a wide variety of food and related products to approximately 4,000 foodservice operators located primarily in New Jersey, metropolitan New York and western Connecticut. Ritter's customer base includes many upscale white tablecloth restaurants in the prestigious Manhattan market, as well as family-style and other restaurants, healthcare and lodging establishments, educational institutions and various other foodservice operations. The company inventories approximately 9,000 foodservice products in a 275,000 square-foot facility that is considered to be one of the most highly mechanized operations within the industry.

 Martin L. Ritter, who continues as president and chief executive officer, joined the company in 1960 after graduating from Brown University and spending a year with a frozen food broker. He assumed his current position in 1980.
 SYSCO, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, is the nation's largest foodservice marketing and distribution organization. The company provides its products and services to approximately 245,000 customers located across the United States and western Canada. The SYSCO distribution network currently covers virtually the entire continental United States, including all of its 150 largest cities.
