MERCURY RECORDS ANNOUNCES UPCOMING RELEASES ON STARDOG LABEL; DEBUT LP BY MULTI-PLATINUM RECORDING ARTISTS UGLY KID JOE TO LEAD SERIES
NEW YORK, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercury's Stardog Records will be issuing releases by multi-platinum recording artists Ugly Kid Joe, newly signed Animal Bag and double CD re-issue package by Seattle-scene forerunners Mother Love Bone. The Stardog imprint will be distributed through PolyGram Group Distribution (PGD).
Mother Love Bone originally created the Stardog label for the release of their records "Shine" and "Apple." Mercury revived Stardog for the release of Ugly Kid Joe's EP last October. All future releases on Stardog will focus on alternative/metal street level bands which will be worked through PolyGram's extensive distribution system.
On the heels of their hugely successful debut EP "As Ugly As They Wanna Be," Ugly Kid Joe's first LP entitled "America's Least Wanted" will be in stores Sept. 8. The record features a guest appearance by Judas Priest's Rob Halford on the track "Goddamn Devil." The Ugly Kids are currently on tour with the legendary Ozzy Osbourne.
Hailing from North Carolina, Animal Bag will release their self- titled debut LP Oct. 6. The record, which includes 13 tracks running the gamut from alternative to rock to bongos to acoustic, was produced by Guy Charboneau (Metallica, Rush, Grateful Dead). Animal Bag will appear in, and perform two songs in, Zalmon King's upcoming film "Lake Consequence." The band also performs two songs on camera. The film will air on Showtime this winter and will be released theatrically overseas.
The Mother Love Bone release, scheduled for Sept. 22, is a compilation of the band's "Shine" EP and the album "Apple." After the untimely death of singer Andrew Wood, members of Mother Love Bone re-grouped to create Pearl Jam. An album tribute to Wood entitled "Temple of the Dog," featuring members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, is currently gaining impressive chart action. Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns" is on the "Singles" soundtrack, Cameron Crowe's movie about the music scene in Seattle.
Ed Eckstine, president of Mercury Records, said upon making the announcement, "We are always looking for new and exciting ways to present and market our artists to the consumer. From its inception Stardog was intended to represent a cutting edge ideal. With the success of Ugly Kid Joe and the imminent re-release of Mother Love Bone's seminal recordings we believe that Stardog will be the label that represents all that is exciting for Mercury on the metal/alternative edge."
Bob Skoro, senior vice president of A&R, added, "The decision to revive the Stardog imprint reflects Mercury's commitment to releasing music of an evolving genre that does not conform to the norm. In keeping with the vibe created by Mother Love Bone, Stardog will aggressively seek out underground bands and nurture their development starting at the street level."
