 MERCK CHAIRMAN ROY VAGELOS TO JOIN PEPSICO'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS
 PURCHASE, N.Y., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- PepsiCo, Inc. (NYSE: PEP) today announced the election of P. Roy Vagelos, M.D. to the company's board of directors. Dr. Vagelos, 62, is chairman of the board and president and chief executive officer of Merck & Co., Inc.

 In each of the last six years, Merck has been selected as America's most admired company in the prestigious annual industry poll conducted by Fortune magazine.
 Dr. Vagelos was elected president and chief executive officer of Merck in July 1985 and chairman of the board of directors in April 1986. He was previously executive vice president of the worldwide health products company and, before that, president of its Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories Division, which he joined in 1975.
 Earlier, Dr. Vagelos served as chairman of the Department of Biological Chemistry of the School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis and director of the university's Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences. He had previously held senior positions in cellular physiology and biochemistry at the National Heart Institute.
 The author of more than 100 scientific papers, Dr. Vagelos is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He serves on visiting committees or advisory boards for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the New Jersey Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine.
 Dr. Vagelos is a Trustee of The Rockefeller University, the University of Pennsylvania and The Danforth Foundation; a director of TRW Inc., The Prudential Insurance Company of America and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
 PepsiCo's board of directors now totals 11 members, following the previously announced retirement of Michael H. Jordan as chairman of PepsiCo's International Foods and Beverage Division.
