MERCEDES-BENZ TOPS DEPENDABILITY STUDY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR MERCEDES IS BEST OVERALL BRAND IN J.D. POWER SURVEY

MONTVALE, N.J., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz continues to outrank all other automotive brands in the United States in long-term dependability, according to the just-released survey results from J.D. Power and Associates, one of the nation's leading independent marketing information firms. For the second year in a row, Mercedes is the best overall brand in the Vehicle Dependability Study.
Designed to explore dependability after five years of ownership, the study involved feedback from 22,000 original owners of 1988 model year cars. Owners were asked to enumerate the problems experienced over the past year, and the Vehicle Dependability Index was established by ranking makes and models based on problems per 100 vehicles and their impact on satisfaction.
"Initial purchase price is obviously only part of the car buying picture," said Mike Jackson, executive vice president for Mercedes-Benz of North America. "We have underscored our strong long-term value story by outranking all other brands for the past two years," he said.
The key areas covered in the study are: engine, body, water leaks, steering and handling, squeaks and rattles, transmission, interior, temperature control, exterior paint and molding, electrical and accessories, brakes and wind noise. Transmission and engine problems were shown to have the greatest impact in the survey.
The J.D. Power findings are complemented by a separate evaluation of long-term value, in which two Mercedes-Benz sedans -- the 190E 2.3 and the 300E -- were recently named "best overall values" among luxury cars by IntelliChoice, Inc., an independent research firm which looks at the total five-year cost to own and operate a vehicle.
The mid-sized 300E sedan beat out domestic and Japanese competitors for the top honors in the IntelliChoice category for luxury cars over $40,000. The four-cylinder 190E 2.3 sports sedan, which carries a list price of under $30,000, led in the under-$40,000 category.
