MERCEDES-BENZ SELECTS BORG-WARNER AS FIRST U.S. SUPPLIER FOR NEW FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLE

WOOD DALE, Ill., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz Project, Inc., a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz AG, today announced it has signed an agreement with Borg-Warner Automotive, Inc., for the supply of transfer cases for a new four-wheel-drive vehicle, which will be produced at the company's new U.S. passenger-vehicle manufacturing facility beginning in 1997.
The five-year agreement -- the first for Mercedes-Benz with a U.S. supplier in connection with the new vehicle -- will be for the development of a new two-speed electronically controlled four-wheel- drive transfer case, designed exclusively for Mercedes-Benz. Some 60,000 units will be produced annually by Borg-Warner Automotive in the U.S.
"As we begin manufacturing in the U.S., it is imperative that we find partners who can provide us with components which meet the technological, performance and quality standards expected in a Mercedes- Benz," said Andreas Renschler, president of Mercedes-Benz Project. "Borg-Warner has demonstrated its leadership in these areas, and we are confident their expertise as an innovative and efficient supplier makes them the right partner for this project."
Borg-Warner Automotive, through its manufacturing facilities in Germany, has been supplying transmission components for Mercedes-Benz Group passenger cars and commercial vehicles for more than 20 years.
Mercedes-Benz Project, Inc., is a member of the Daimler-Benz Group, which has more than 15,000 employees in North America through its four corporate units: Mercedes-Benz AG (passenger cars and commercial vehicles); AEG (automation, electrotechnical systems, rail systems and microelectronics); Deutsche Aerospace (aircraft, space systems, defense and civil systems, propulsion systems); and debis (computing, financial, insurance, trading and marketing services).
