MERCEDES-BENZ AWARDS CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AND ARCHITECTURAL/ENGINEERING DESIGN CONTRACTS FOR NEW TUSCALOOSA PLANT

 Alabama Firms to Provide Services
 TUSCALOOSA, Ala., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz Project,

Inc. today announced the awarding of two major contracts for the construction management and design of its new $300 million passenger vehicle manufacturing facility in Tuscaloosa. Fluor Daniel Inc. of Irvine, Calif., has been awarded the program and construction management contract, and Albert Kahn Associates, Inc., of Detroit, has been selected for the architectural and engineering design of the plant, which will produce a new interpretation of the sport utility vehicle and employ some 1,500 workers.
"Both Fluor Daniel and Albert Kahn Associates have the automotive experience and reputation for quality that are necessary to assist us in building a world-class manufacturing facility," said Mercedes-Benz Project President Andreas Renschler, who heads up the new company responsible for the development, production and worldwide marketing of the new Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle, which will go on sale in 1997. "In addition, both firms intend to hire local Alabama companies to work with them to assure that the highest quality and most effective levels of services are utilized when building the plant."
Fluor Daniel will provide construction management services, including overall program supervision, as well as developing bid lists; cost and scheduling assistance; monitoring and evaluating work by contractors, vendors and suppliers; and quality control throughout the construction. Working on behalf of Mercedes-Benz Project, Fluor Daniel will be the primary coordinator for the plant development project, which should extend through 1997. Fluor Daniel is one of the world's leading engineering and construction firms and served as Mercedes-Benz Project's site selection consultant during the six-month search for a location for the new plant.
Albert Kahn Associates (AKA) will provide the architectural and engineering design for the factory and will be utilizing the services of a number of Alabama firms, including Gresham, Smith and Partners of Birmingham; McGiffert and Associates of Tuscaloosa; and Grover Harrison Harrison, P.C., of Birmingham. The involvement of Alabama firms is consistent with Mercedes-Benz Project's goal of utilizing local companies whenever possible. AKA was selected for its previous experience with the design of automotive facilities and for its reputation for quality.
Mercedes-Benz Project, Inc. is a member of the Daimler-Benz Group, which employs more than 15,000 employees in North America through its four corporate units: Mercedes-Benz (passenger cars and commercial vehicles); AEG (automation, electrotechnical systems, rail systems and microelectronics); Deutsche Aerospace (aircraft, space systems, defense and civil systems, propulsion systems); and debis (computing, financial, insurance, trading and marketing services).
