MERCEDES S-CLASS WINS TWO AAA AWARDS; TWO AUTO CLUB EVALUATIONS HONOR S-CLASS MODELS

MONTVALE, N.J., Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz S-Class luxury sedans are winners of two different American Automobile Association evaluation programs, including the motoring federation's third annual AutoTest of 121 new models, it was announced today by Mercedes-Benz of North America, Inc.
The recently introduced 400SEL long-wheelbase model has been ranked highest by AAA in the over-$50,000 category. Experts based at AAA headquarters in Orlando, Fla., rated vehicles by assigning from one to 10 points in 20 categories such as workmanship, comfort, convenience, braking, handling, acceleration, and fuel economy.
The 33.7-million-member national association is publishing its top new car selections for 1993 in AAA World and other membership magazines as well as AAA AutoTest, an annual publication available through bookstores and participating AAA Clubs.
On the West Coast, the standard-wheelbase Mercedes 300SE model was the top scorer in the AAA's three-million-member Auto Club of Southern California 1992 Target Car evaluation.
Criteria for this program are based on results from real-world member surveys ranking the desirability of a wide variety of often- contradictory vehicle characteristics. For example, an ideal car (according to ACSC members) provides safe, quiet and comfortable transportation in an easy-to-handle package with outstanding performance and good fuel economy. Where applicable, the ACSC program also uses test practices recommended by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
One of five Mercedes S-Class sedan models, the 300SE combines the comfort of a large luxury sedan with six-cylinder engine efficiency. The 300SE is powered by a 228-hp, 24-valve six and features one of the few five-speed automatic transmissions in the auto industry.
A not-for-profit organization of 145 regional clubs in North America, the AAA is the nation's largest auto club, providing services ranging from emergency road service to trip planning.
