MERCEDES S-CLASS CARS MORE FUEL-EFFICIENT FOR 1994; PREMIUM MODELS AVERAGE 8.6 PERCENT MORE MPG

MONTVALE, N.J., Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercedes-Benz has made a number of refinements to its top-of-the-line family of S-Class luxury sedans and coupes for 1994. Most notably, fuel mileage has been increased -- by an average of 8.6 percent -- for all seven models, eliminating or reducing the gas guzzler tax (GGT) on five. The '94 models begin arriving in dealerships this week.
The S320 sedan, which sheds its $1,700 GGT by virtue of an 18.8 percent better mileage rating, gets HFM mutliport fuel injection, an integrated fuel/ignition system developed for the new generation of high-efficiency 24-valve Mercedes six-cylinder engines.
New model-year suggested price increases, averaging 1 percent, have been offset in most cases by a reduced GGT. For two cars -- the S500 sedan and coupe -- the net effect is no price increase at all, while for the S320, there is actually a $1,000 decrease compared to the '93 version. Prices for '94 begin at $70,600 for the S320 and S350 Turbodiesel models.
Other '94 changes for all S-Class models include a new radio with improved reception, better tape operation and a weather band, as well as a new handset and remote microphone for the optional cellular phone (standard on the S600 sedan and coupe) for better sound quality in the "hands-free" mode.
The S-Class cars are completely CFC-free (an industry first, introduced by Mercedes in April 1991 when the '92 S-Class line made its debut), and have no ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons in their air-conditioning systems. This, and other CFC-reduction measures, earned Mercedes a Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the EPA.
The Mercedes S-Class line includes the standard-wheelbase S350 Turbodiesel (not available in California or New York) and the S320 sedans as well as the long-wheelbase S420, S500 and limited-production S600 models. The S500 and S600 are also available as two-door specialty coupes.
 The S350 Turbodiesel has a 3.5-liter turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 148 horsepower, while the 3.2-liter gasoline six-cylinder engine in the S320 is rated at 228 horsepower. The S420's 4.2-liter V8 produces 275 horesepower, the S500 has a 315-hp 5.0-liter V8, and the S600 is powered by a 389-hp V12.
The S-Class cars take advantage of the latest developments in comfort, occupant crash protection, aerodynamics and engine management technology.
The side windows, for example, fit flush with the body to reduce aerodynamic drag, with the added benefit of reducing wind noise. The windows themselves have double panes with an insulating layer of dry air between, helping to resist fogging and reduce interior noise levels.
The S-Class embodies the latest in safety advances, derived from the Mercedes-Benz's more than 50 years of safety development and 20 years of accident investigation work. The car's unit body utilizes sections with twice the strength of conventional sheet steel in high-load areas.
Using computer-aided design, the S-Class body shape and construction were optimized for passenger protection in both full frontal and the more frequent offset-frontal collisions.
Standard features on all S-Class sedans and coupes include driver and passenger air bags, ABS anti-lock brakes, 12-way power front seats (with a memory system for three different drivers that "remembers" the position of the tilt-telescopic steering wheel, headrest and all three rear-view mirrors) and separate climate-control thermostats for the driver and front-seat passenger.
Other standard features are a leather interior, an 11-speaker Bose(R) sound system, "soft-close" power door latches, infrared remote locking, an anti-theft system and an integrated cellular phone antenna and phone prewiring.
Like all Mercedes-Benz models, the S-Class sedans and coupes come with a four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Even better, all Mercedes cars -- regardless of model year -- are covered by the 24-hour Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance Program. This peace of mind even includes free tire changes, jump starts and a few gallons of fuel for any Mercedes owner, even those driving a model which may have been produced decades ago.
