MEP wants France to pay for beef ban.
WEST MIDLANDS MEP Philip Bushill-Matthews has criticised the European Commission for its slow response to France's continuing ban on British beef. The Conservative MEP tabled a formal question to the Commission in February, asking when it was going to take decisive action against France, following the ruling by the European Court of Justice that the continuing ban was against EU law.
He said: "I have at last got a reply, saying that the commission has written a strong letter to the French government. Wow! Coming at the same time as a commission report that France's own beef industry is genuinely suspect, in that specified risk material is not being collected and disposed of according to EU requirements, this feeble response is outrageous.
"France should be penalised with a daily fine in accordance with EU law, and should also be charged compensation for our farmers.
"If only the UK government had pushed harder for this in the first place, firmer action would have been taken long before now."
