MENLO PARK FIRM AIDS IN HAWAIIAN RESCUE EFFORTS
MENLO PARK, Calif., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Failure Analysis

Associates Inc. (FaAA) (NASDAQ: FAIL) has been called in to provide guidance and advice to rescue teams on the structural integrity of structures damaged by Hurricane Iniki, the firm said today. Failure Analysis Associates provides employees as members of the National Urban Search and Rescue Team (USRT). The National USRT, organized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), coordinates the identification, training, equipping, mobilization and deployment of civilian search and rescue resources, in conjunction with Department of Defense assets, to save lives. The engineers will advise rescuers so that they can enter and handle damaged structures with less risk to themselves and those who may be trapped by them.
Three structural engineers were sent from the Menlo Park office: John Osteraas, Ph.D., manager of the Structural and Geotechnical Group. Dr. Osteraas has a Ph.D. in structural engineering. Joel Wolf holds an MS degree in civil and environmental engineering, and Brant Lahnert holds an MS degree in civil engineering. All three are registered professional engineers in California.
The engineers are expected to view the damaged structures and check critical structural elements that might cause a collapse. The engineers then advise other emergency personnel on which structural members can be cut, shored or moved during rescue efforts. Based on this information, emergency teams can plan a strategy for the rescue.
The Menlo Park Fire Department sponsored Failure Analysis Associates' participation on the National Urban Search and Rescue Team. In addition to recruiting civilian companies for the team, the Menlo Park Fire Department operates a training center in Menlo Park to train emergency personnel in realistic building rescue situations.
Failure Analysis Associates Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Failure Group Inc. and is a leading independent consulting firm devoted primarily to the investigation, analysis and prevention of failures of an engineering or scientific nature. Failure Analysis Associates was founded in 1967, and is celebrating its 25th year. The company has headquarters facilities in Menlo Park, and operates offices in the United States, Europe and Canada. Failure Analysis Associates is traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol FAIL.
