MEMBERS OF USWA VOTE TO AUTHORIZE STRIKE

PITTSBURGH, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) employed by Bethlehem Steel Corp. (NYSE: BS) voted overwhelmingly today to authorize a strike if the union's negotiating committee deems such action necessary.
The USWA's current contract with Bethlehem expires Saturday, July 31.
The strike authorization votes were conducted among more than 12,300 USWA members at Bethlehem Steel facilities at Lackawanna, N.Y., Sparrows Point, Md., and Burns Harbor, Ind. The total vote count was about 99 percent in favor of strike action.
John H. Reck, director of USWA District 7, and chairman of the union's negotiating committee, and David Wilson, director of USWA District 8, and the committee secretary, said the vote showed the membership fully united behind the negotiating committee.
"We are very gratified by this expression of support by our members," Reck and Wilson said, adding, "We want the company to know that, while we are fully prepared for any eventuality, there is still time for the company and the union to reach agreement on a new contract."
The local unions conducting the strike authorization votes were Locals 2601, 2602, 2603, 2604 and 3144, which represent about 1,160 members at Lackawanna; Locals 2609, 2610, 4717, 9084 and 9116, representing about 6,580 members at Sparrows Point; and Locals 6787 and 9144, representing about 4,600 members at Burns Harbor.
