MEMBERS OF GARMENT WORKERS UNION TO JOIN CWA MEMBERS IN AT&T PROTEST
Hundreds of members of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union -- in Miami for their convention -- will join members of the Communications Workers of America Local 3122 in a protest of AT&T's plans to replace 6,000 telephone operators with voice robotic technology.
The demonstration will be held at the AT&T Operator Center at 9101 Southwest 24th St. in Miami, on Tuesday, June 16, at 12:30 p.m. The ILGWU Chorus will sing; speakers will include operators who have helped callers handle emergency situations.
AT&T -- in implementing the first wave of the new technology -- plans to lay off 6,000 operators nationwide, and close operator services offices in Orlando, Pensacola and Westchester, Fla. The robots will first be deployed today in Jacksonville, Fla., and Seattle.
In difficult negotiations with AT&T, CWA has sought the support of unions such as the ILGWU to help put pressure on AT&T to reach agreement on a new three-year contract. Sticking points in the talks are employment security, wages and pensions, including the union's efforts to retain jobs for the operators and quality service for AT&T customers.
CWA represents over 600,000 workers in telecommunications, printing, publishing, media, health care, and the public sector in the United States and Canada. CWA represents 100,000 workers at AT&T nationwide.
