Milestones, awards, educational opportunities

NCEW member Andrea Neal has been promoted to editorial page editor at The Indianapolis Star. She was chief editorial writer.

NCEW member Bruce Dold has been named editorial page editor of the Chicago Tribune. He had been deputy editorial page editor and a columnist. He replaces Don Wycliff, who is now the Tribune's public editor (ombudsman).

NCEW member Max Jones has been promoted to editor of the Tribune-Star in Terre Haute, Ind., from editorial page editor. He still writes and oversees editorials.

NCEW member Tracy Warner is editorial page editor of The Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Ind. He replaced NCEW member Larry Hayes, who recently retired after writing a column for several months. Also new to the Fort Wayne staff is former NCEW member Joe Beck, who was with the Southern Illinoisan in Carbondale, Ill.

NCEW member and syndicated columnist Rick Horowitz won an Emmy Award for his commentaries on "InterCHANGE," a weekly public-affairs program on Milwaukee Public Television. This was Horowitz's first Emmy, and his fourth nomination.

NCEW member Elissa Papirno is president of Organization of News Ombudsmen. A former member of The Hartford Courant editorial board, she now writes a regular column as the newspapers' reader representative.
