MELLON BANK ELECTS DR. JOAB L. THOMAS TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 PITTSBURGH, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Joab L. Thomas, Ph.D., president of The Pennsylvania State University, has been elected to the boards of directors of Mellon Bank Corporation (NYSE: MEL) and Mellon Bank, N.A., effective Sept. 21.
 "Dr. Thomas is a distinguished educator and community leader, and we are delighted that he will be joining our board," said Frank V. Cahouet, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Mellon Bank Corporation. "His efforts to strengthen the scholastic and research missions of Penn State have been notable, and Mellon certainly will benefit from his guidance and counsel."
 Thomas was named president of Penn State in July 1990, after having served as president of the University of Alabama from 1981-1988 and chancellor of North Carolina State University from 1976-1981. From 1961- 1975, Thomas served in several positions at the University of Alabama, including vice president for student affairs; dean of student affairs; assistant dean, college of arts and sciences; and professor of biology. Thomas was on the research staff of Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum from 1959-1961, and was a teaching fellow at Harvard from 1955- 1959.
 He received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in biology from Harvard University.
 Thomas currently serves on the board of directors of Blount, Incorporated; Lukens Inc.; the International Fund for Agricultural Research; the Pennsylvania Economic Development Partnership; and the State College Area Chamber of Commerce. He served as co-chair of the Committee of Presidents of the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities, and is a former director of the International Service for National Agricultural Research, The Hague, Holland. Thomas is a member of the American Institute of Biological Sciences and the American Society of Plant Taxonomists.
