MELLON AWARDS GRANT TO PENNSYLVANIA FOOD BANKS

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 20 ~PRNewswire~ -- Mellon Bank Corporation (NYSE: MEL) today awarded a $15,000 grant to the Pennsylvania Association of Regional Food Banks (PARF) for the group's statewide transportation fund.
PARF is a network of 15 food banks located throughout the state. Their regional food banks warehouse and distribute donated food to over 2,000 nonprofit agencies that serve people in need in Pennsylvania. PARF distributed a total of 33 million pounds of food in 1991.
"Because PARF supplies food to organizations throughout the state, the need for transportation funds is great," said James P. McDonald, head of Community Affairs for Mellon. "Occasionally, PARF has had to turn down food donations because it didn't have the money to transport that food to other food banks. Hopefully, this grant from Mellon will make it easier for PARF to distribute food to groups across the state."
PARF member food banks are located in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Erie, Wilkes Barre, Johnstown, Altoona, Reading, Bethlehem, Williamsport, Washington, Greensburg, Uniontown and York. Each regional food bank warehouse supplies food to pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and other community-based agencies.
Over the past six years, Mellon Bank Corporation has contributed more than $72 million in cash, in-kind donations and volunteer time to civic, economic development, educational, human services and cultural organizations.
With assets of approximately $30 billion, Mellon Bank Corporation is a major superregional bank holding company. Through its subsidiaries, it provides wholesale, retail and middle market banking as well as numerous service products including trust and investment, cash management and financial data processing.
