FEARLESS five-year-old Melissa Chapman waded waist-deep into a pond to save a little boy of three.

Geordie Gray tripped and fell in as the duo and a group of other young friends admired the colourful koi carp in a neighbour's garden.

When he sank under the water Melissa realised the danger, marched in and hauled him out.

Geordie's mum Donna, 31, of South Shields, Tyne and Wear, said: "When she brought Geordie to the front door he was covered in black moss. She'd pulled him out by the scruff of his neck and dragged him to the side.

"When she told me what she'd done I gave her a big hug. If it wasn't for Melissa I'm sure I'd have lost my little boy."

Melissa's mum Julie Ord, 23, said: "I'm proud of her. I didn't realise Melissa knew about the dangers of water but she knew exactly what to do.

"Now Geordie wants to be by her side all the time. She has become his hero."
