MEL BAY PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCES 'IMMIGRANT SONGBOOK'
PACIFIC, Mo., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released

today by Mel Bay Publications Inc.:
"Immigrant Songbook" is a unique collection that reflects the immigrant experience through the songs they sang -- songs dealing with leaving the old country, sailing the perilous ocean, arriving and settling in America, the hopes and fears, the joys and sorrows, the homesickness and the confidence.
Never before has such a collection of immigrants' songs been assembled under one cover. It is a major publishing event which will greatly contribute to the understanding of the musical and cultural heritage of the immigrant peoples who built America.
Equally important is the fact that "Immigrant Songbook" is a collection of beautiful, singable songs -- not merely quaint cultural relics.
"Immigrant Songbook" is ideal for classroom use, as well as a book that is of interest to the general public. The book should serve as a valuable study resource, as well as the basis for concerts. As a folksinger and guitarist, Jerry Silverman has presented many such concerts.
 Contents and Format
The book contains: 144 songs from 44 countries in their original languages, with singable English translations; arranged for voice and piano, with guitar cords; historical and anecdotal commentary on the songs; photos from the Ellis Island Archives and private collections; large music-folio pages, size (8-3/4 inches by 11-3/4 inches); over 400 pages. The book is $29.95.
Songs of the following nationalities are included: Armenia, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, China, Croatia, Cuba, Czechia, Denmark, Egypt, England, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Jewish, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Rumania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Trinidad, Turkey and Ukraine.
In addition, there is a section of songs from the United States, including an original setting of Emma Lazarus' poem, "The New Colossus," (which is inscribed on the base of the Statue of Liberty) and "To Come to America," a song written by elementary school children in a workshop conducted by Jerry Silverman.
