 MEHRABIAN ELECTED TO PPG'S BOARD
 PITTSBURGH, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Robert Mehrabian, president


of Carnegie Mellon University, today was elected to PPG Industries' (NYSE: PPG) board of directors.
 Mehrabian, 51, has been president of Carnegie Mellon since 1990, when he joined the university. Prior to that, he had been dean of the College of Engineering of the University of California at Santa Barbara since 1983.
 His previous posts included director of the Center for Materials Science of the National Bureau of Standards, now the National Institute of Standards and Technology, professor of metallurgy and professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and associate professor and co-supervisor of the Solidification Laboratories of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
 Of Armenian descent, Mehrabian was born in Tehran, Iran, and is a U.S. citizen. He holds bachelor's and doctor's degrees from MIT in the field of materials. Mehrabian has published more than 140 technical papers and edited six books in the field.
 Among other activities and honors, he is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering, a fellow of the American Society for Metals International, the recipient of the Henry Marion Howe Medal of the America Society of Metals, a founder of Superconductors Technologies Incorporated of Santa Barbara and a member of the board of directors of DQE, a Pittsburgh-based energy services holding company.
