MEETING APRIL 23 TO LAUNCH COALITION IN SUPPORT OF KROGER STRIKERS
MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- United Food and Commercial Workers, Local 876, representing striking cashiers and clerks, and Local 539, representing striking Kroger meatcutters, announced today they are inviting area labor organizations and community groups to join in forming a Labor/Community Coalition in support of the Kroger strikers. The coalition will be launched at a meeting Thursday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m. at International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 58's union hall in Detroit, 1358 Abbott (entrance on Porter east of Trumbull).
In a joint statement, Local 876 President Ronald Brown and Local 539 President Andy Johnson said, "We believe our struggle with the Kroger Company is of critical importance to the entire labor movement. We also think the consuming public as a whole has a lot at stake in seeing to it that Kroger workers are treated fairly and that their living standards are not devastated or their jobs eliminated by a union-busting employer. Thursday night's meeting is open to all groups interested in supporting the strike against Kroger until a fair and just contract is won."
