MEDTRONIC MICRO-REL PLANS EXPANSION TO PRODUCE CIRCUITS
 FOR NEW MEDICAL DEVICE
TEMPE, Ariz., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Medtronic Micro-Rel, a division of Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT), announced today that it plans to purchase nearby land and buildings that will expand its square footage by more than 25 percent.
Micro-Rel is a developer and manufacturer of specialized integrated electronic circuits. Its expansion reflects the continuing growth of Medtronic, the world's leading manufacturer of ultra high-reliability implantable medical devices.
Micro-Rel plans to purchase 4.61 acres of land and buildings totaling 47,393 square feet located across the street from its current facilities at 2343 W. Tenth Place, Tempe, Ariz. The space will house administrative functions now in leased space elsewhere and provide a focused assembly area to support Medtronic's Tachyarrhythmia Management business.
This area will supply advanced circuitry for Medtronic's new PCD(TM) (pacer-cardioverter-defibrillator), an implantable device designed to control hearts that beat dangerously fast. The PCD, now on the market in Europe, awaits approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for marketing in the United States.
Michael M. Selzer, vice president and general manager of Micro-Rel, noted that Medtronic has been exceeding its growth objective of 15 percent a year, with significant impact on the capacity of the Tempe facilities.
"Medtronic and Medtronic Micro-Rel are committed to achieve the highest possible standards of quality and efficiency with the latest world-class manufacturing techniques. This investment supports that commitment and helps ensure the best possible products for physicians and patients worldwide."
Selzer said that the Micro-Rel workforce of 950 would not be expanded immediately but that he expected steady growth over the next few years.
Medtronic, Inc., is headquartered in Minneapolis, and does business in 80 countries. It is the world's leading developer and manufacturer of cardiac pacemakers and also supplies prosthetic heart valves, cardiopulmonary equipment, catheters for coronary angioplasty and neurological stimulation devices.
