MEDTRONIC APPOINTS COLLINS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT) announced today that Arthur D. Collins, Jr., has been appointed chief operating officer. Collins will report to William W. George, president and chief executive officer.
 Collins, formerly executive vice president and president of Medtronic International, will have responsibility for operations of all Medtronic businesses both inside and outside the United States. George said Collins will join Glen D. Nelson, M.D., vice chairman, and himself in the office of the chief executive officer.
 George said, "Art Collins has demonstrated strong executive leadership qualities and has done an exceptional job of guiding our international business in a challenging world environment. His abilities and international experience will serve Medtronic well in a new management structure designed to position the company for continued growth."
 Bill K. Erickson, senior vice president and president U.S. cardiovascular sales and marketing, was appointed president of an Americas geographic area, comprised of the United States, Canada and Latin America. Erickson, along with the other heads of geographic areas and business units will report to Collins.
 Collins, 46, joined Medtronic on June 1, 1992, after serving as a corporate vice president of Abbott Laboratories where he headed its Diagnostic Business Units. Earlier experience included consultancy with Booz, Allen & Hamilton and service as an officer in the U.S. Navy. He is a graduate of Miami University of Ohio and received a master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School.
