 PARAMUS, N.J., March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- MEDphone Corporation

(AMEX: MPO.EC) and Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems announced today that an agreement has been signed to jointly market the MDphone Cellular + Rescue(TM), a state-of-art, interactive medical emergency unit the size of a briefcase. The cellular unit which is designed for use by non- medical personnel will utilize Southwestern Bell's extensive cellular network to assist in providing rapid communication, diagnosis, and remote treatment for medical emergencies. The MDphone Cellular + Rescue is the only unit of its kind whereby a doctor at a base station can remotely "jump start" the heart of an individual in cardiac arrest or give critical advice and support in any medical emergency.
"This new application of data over cellular demonstrates how cellular technology can improve the quality of life for our customers," said Bob Nelson, president and general manager of Cellular One(R) of Chicago. "We're expanding the frontier of personal communications by giving our customers immediate access to medical assistance."
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems and MEDphone Corporation will launch the MDphone Cellular + Rescue program through Cellular One in Chicago, using a MDphone base station located at Good Samaritan Hospital. The program will later expand into other SBMS cellular service areas in Texas, Missouri, Indiana, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C.
"We designed the MDphone Cellular + Rescue to fulfill the need for immediate communications, diagnosis, and rapid treatment at the scene of a medical emergency before paramedics arrive," said S. Eric Wachtel, president of MEDphone Corporation. "The ultimate objective is to make this life-saving technology available on a worldwide basis to corporations, health clubs, offshore oil rigs, cruise ships, and remote communities. The MDphone System is already enabling police officers, firemen, and employees at Fortune 100 companies in 12 U.S. cities to have access to emergency department doctors in less than a minute."
Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems, based in Dallas, provides cellular service to more than 1.4 million people in 54 cellular service areas throughout the Southwest, Midwest, and East Coast.
