MEDIVATORS, INC. NEW SUBSIDIARY, MEDIFLEX, INC. CANNON FALLS, Minn., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- MediVators, Inc.
(NASDAQ: MVAT) announced today that its newly formed subsidiary MediFlex, Inc. has signed a long-term, exclusive patent license agreement with the Stanford University Office of Technology licensing, Palo Alto, Calif.
MediFlex is now developing a highly dexterous, electrically actuated endoscope for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures. The basic technology was developed at Stanford University by Dr. Ron Maynard who is joining MediFlex, Inc. as vice president of research and development. A 12 French version of the device can bend 180 degrees in any direction while providing a clear 2.4 mm diameter channel for fiber optics and surgical tools. Each joint produces a torque which is equal to or greater than conventional pull wire endoscopes and is expected to exceed the lifetime of those devices. The electrically actuated joint is based on an inherently reliable process. However, should a joint failure occur, the distal end will become highly compliant thereby avoiding tissue damage upon extraction. An interface slave device and micro controller are combined to provide a sophisticated "fly-by-wire" control system. Articulation commands are generated by manipulating the slave device which is similar in form to conventional endoscope controls. High-speed micro controllers process those command signals and distribute them to the proper joints within the articulating distal tip. This system can safely produce precise, highly complex trajectories with response times of less than one second. It is expected that the successful development of this device will provide medicine with a powerful new tool for advance endoscopic procedures. -0- 11/10/92 /CONTACT: Curtis D.
