MEDICIS ANNOUNCES MARKETING AGREEMENT WITH WESTWOOD-SQUIBB

 NEW YORK, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Medicis Pharmaceutical Corporation (NASDAQ: MDRXA) announced today that it has entered into a marketing agreement with Westwood-Squibb, a research-based pharmaceutical skin care company in the Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) Pharmaceutical Group. The agreement provides for Medicis to receive a quarterly fee for detailing two Westwood-Squibb brands, HALOG (halcinonide) and DESQUAM (benzoyl peroxide), to dermatologists nationwide.
 HALOG is a high-potency topical steroid, important in the treatment of inflammatory conditions of the skin such as psoriasis and eczema. The topical steroid market is $400 million in the U.S. DESQUAM is a leading line of prescription benzoyl peroxide products, effective in the treatment of acne. Sales of acne products in the U.S. are $400 million.
 Jonah Shacknai, Medicis Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented on the importance of the agreement to his company.  Medicis nationally markets numerous prescription and over-the- counter products which effectively treat various dermatological conditions. The Company reported profitably for the first time for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 1993.
